WHAT ARE FEET FOR?
What are feet for
but to go around the Ka’ba?
What are eyes for
but to look upon God’s House?
What are lips for
but to kiss the Black Stone?
What are hands for
but to supplicate our Lord?
What’s the heart for
but to open to His Light?

MIRACLE OF SOUND AT THE KA’BA
What sounds are heard around God’s House?
First, utter silence, silence within silence. Then
its echo,
more silent still.
A silence that sits deep under the Throne of God –
all other silence surrounds it and
slowly turns.
Every other silence partakes of that silence. Silence in
eyes, silence in tongues, silence in the
womb, the silence of death.
The [...]

COUPLETS (PUNJABI STYLE)
For Shaykh Masum and his sweet murid Ahmad Mirza
1
The raw onion sat in the sun but didn’t cook
Deeper than the soul is the Secret and the Secret is in God’s precincts
2
Three windows shut one window open the door ajar
Our senses lie in a lying universe but the closed room is open
3
Red roses all [...]

DUE MEASURE
Each world falls away to show another
Behind a field of trillion stars dimensions unfold and
in a pinhole more gigantic whose adjective is so
inadequate because gigantic is for polar bears or
canyons while this is
a sideless box no top no bottom in which everything we
see and are
all our planetary and constellational vastness and
complexity the whole [...]

LOOKING AND SEEING
The hardwood trees knocked to see if He was there
and He replied
but He was not there
And the rainfall straight down sought Him
and He Spoke
but He was not where they were
And the fires reached skyward to find Him
with their snaky fingers and His Voice could be
heard entwining among them
but He was not
where embers lay
And [...]

APPLE PEEL EPIPHANY
I was peeling an apple in the sink round and round listening to a tape
repeating the Name of God
When suddenly the peel went on forever extending past time and space
as if ignited by the flame of God
Past walls and windows – out in the sky – past our planetary horizon
completely –
The apple peel [...]

KIND OF PERSON
I’m not the kind of person who gets his shoes shined
but go to the plastic box at the bottom of my closet
with the waxes and brushes to do it myself
But I’m also not the kind of person who
works outside all day in the sun getting leathery and
prematurely brown with ox-drawn plows or [...]
